Prior to taking up her current post as Associate Concertmaster with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Liu-Yi Retallick lived in Malaysia, freelancing with both the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Orchestra on a regular basis. 

Liu-Yi has performed recitals in cities across Asia, including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Phnom Penh, Ipoh, and Yangon. As an avid chamber musician she has played and led ensembles such as the KL String Ensemble, KLPac Sinfonietta, National Youth Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur, and the KL String Project.

An active supporter of new music, Liu-Yi has performed and premiered many of her fellow peers and colleagues works both in Singapore and overseas, most recently performing for the Singapore Composers Lab, a comprehensive workshopping platform for young composers.

She has also worked and studied with from some of the world’s most notable artists, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, James Judd, Kees Bakels, John Georgiadis, Eiji Oue, Ning Feng, Vadim Repin, Robert Spano and Manuel Nawri.

Liu-Yi frequently freelances with a number of ensembles based in Southeast-Asia, including:  Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, and the Singapore Lyric Opera, becoming Associate Concertmaster of the APO in 2016.
